STAGE 1. APPLYING FOR CANADA-DIY
Welcome to Engage-DIY.
You have decided to prepare your Canadian immigration application yourself. This means that you will collect your information, check your eligibility, prepare your documents, complete your online profile and, where applicable, submit your permanent residence application yourself.
Please work through this course carefully and do not rush any step. Canadian immigration applications contain important personal, educational, employment and family information. The information you provide to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) must be complete, accurate and supported by appropriate documents.
At this stage, your first objective is to understand your position and prepare your basic information before you start your Express Entry process.
STEP 1. Check your eligibility and expected CRS score
Please make sure you have already reviewed your eligibility for the immigration program that you intend to use.
If you are considering the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), please review its current requirements, including skilled work experience, approved language testing, education and, where applicable, proof of funds.
Please also calculate your expected Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score.
The CRS is used to rank eligible Express Entry candidates in the pool. Entering the Express Entry pool does NOT guarantee that you will receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA).
Your CRS score can change if your circumstances change, for example, if you obtain a new language test result, gain additional work experience, receive a qualifying job offer, change your marital status or have another significant change in your profile.
Please therefore keep your assessment up to date.
STEP 2. Prepare your personal information
Before starting your online Express Entry profile, please gather your information carefully.
You should have the necessary information relating to:
• Your passport and personal identity
• Your marital status and family members
• Your education and educational credentials
• Your language test results
• Your employment and work experience
• Your addresses and travel history, where required
• Your immigration history
• Your intended destination in Canada
• Your proof of funds, where applicable
• Other information requested by IRCC
Please enter information exactly as it appears in your official documents.
DO NOT guess dates, employment periods, addresses or other important information.
If you are uncertain about any historical information, please check your original documents and records before entering the information into your profile.
STEP 3. Create your Express Entry profile
Please create your Express Entry profile through your IRCC secure account.
IRCC currently describes the process as follows:
Once submitted, eligible candidates are placed in the Express Entry pool and receive a CRS score. IRCC then ranks candidates and conducts rounds of invitations.
Please remember that an Express Entry profile is NOT the same as a permanent residence application.
You first create and submit your profile. If IRCC later sends you an Invitation to Apply, you then proceed to the permanent residence application stage.
STEP 4. Review your profile CAREFULLY before submission
Please check every section before you submit your Express Entry profile.
Pay particular attention to:
• Names and dates of birth
• Passport information
• Education
• Language test results
• Employment history
• Work experience
• Marital status
• Family information
• CRS-related information
• Your intended province or territory
• Proof of funds information, where applicable
Please DO NOT provide information simply because you believe it will increase your CRS score.
IRCC states that providing false information or leaving out important information can result in refusal, inadmissibility and, in serious cases, a 5-year bar from applying to come to Canada.
STEP 5. Submit your profile and monitor your account
Once you have reviewed everything, please submit your Express Entry profile.
IRCC currently gives you 60 days to complete and submit an Express Entry profile once you have started the profile.
After submission, please regularly check your IRCC secure account and keep your information up to date.
If your circumstances change, you may need to update your profile. For example, IRCC identifies changes such as a new language test, a change in employment, marriage or divorce, or the birth or adoption of a child as situations that may require an update.
STEP 6. Understand what happens after entering the pool
After you enter the Express Entry pool, you are ranked according to the CRS.
You may receive an Invitation to Apply if your profile is selected in an applicable round of invitations.
Please remember:
Entering the pool does NOT guarantee an invitation.
If you receive an Invitation to Apply, you normally have 60 days to submit your permanent residence application.
At that point, you will need to complete the application forms, upload the required documents, pay the applicable fees and submit the application through your IRCC account.
