SOP001 — Quality of Education in Italy

Dear SOP-DIY Student,

Welcome to Lesson 1 of the Student Outreach Program-DIY (SOP-DIY). This lesson will help you understand why Italy is a smart choice for your higher education. By the end of this lesson, you will know what makes Italian universities stand out, how affordable studying in Italy can be, and what student life looks like there. Please go through each step carefully and complete the tasks before moving on.

Step 1: Understand the Quality of Italian Universities

Italy has a long and respected tradition in higher education. Today, around 10 Italian universities rank among the top 250 universities in the world. Across Italy, there are over 100 public and private universities offering more than 15,000 study programs in fields like Engineering, Business, Agriculture, Law, Sciences, Arts, and more.

This means that no matter what field you want to study, Italy very likely has a university and a program for you.

Your Task:

Go to the QS World University Rankings website and search for Italian universities. Make a note of at least three universities that offer programs in your field of interest. You will use this list in the next steps.

Step 2: Learn About the Cost of Studying in Italy

One of the biggest advantages of Italy is how affordable it is compared to countries like the US, UK, or Canada, where one semester alone can cost $20,000 or more.

In Italy, annual tuition fees at public universities typically range between €500 and €2,500 per year. Many students also qualify for scholarships, tuition waivers, and monthly government stipends of €600 to €900, which can cover most or all of your living and study costs.

Your Task:

Open a folder on your desktop and name it ‘My SOP-DIY’. Inside it, create an MS Excel (or Google Sheets) file. Look up the tuition fees of the three universities you identified in Step 1 by visiting their official websites. Write down the fees for each university so you can compare them later.

Step 3: Find English-Taught Programs

You do not need to know Italian language to study in Italy. Many Italian universities offer full degree programs taught entirely in English, at both Bachelor and Master level.

Your Task:

Visit the official websites of your three shortlisted universities. On each website, look for a section called ‘International Students’ or ‘Study in English’ or ‘English-Taught Programs’. Find at least one program per university that is taught in English and matches your area of interest. Bookmark these pages in your browser so you can return to them easily.

Please do not worry about language requirements just yet. In a later lesson, we will provide you with a ready-made list of Italian universities and English-taught programs, so you will not have to search everything on your own.

Step 4: Understand IELTS and English Test Requirements

Not all Italian universities require an IELTS score for admission into their English-taught programs. However, having an IELTS score is strongly recommended.

Here is why:

First, having an IELTS score improves your chances of being selected, especially when two applicants are equally strong in other areas. Second, Italian Embassy visa officers give higher consideration to applicants who have taken standardized tests like IELTS, SAT, or TOLC, as it shows you are serious and prepared. Third, it strengthens your application for scholarships and government bursaries.

Your Task:

Make a note in your ‘My SOP-DIY’ folder that you need to plan for IELTS preparation. In a later lesson, you will learn exactly when and how to register for the test.

Step 5: Get a Feel for Student Life in Italy

Italy is one of the most welcoming countries in the world for international students. Cities like Milan, Padua, and Bologna have large international student communities, making it easier to settle in, make friends, and feel at home.

The cost of living in Italy is also relatively manageable for a student, especially when you factor in university accommodation, meal plans, and the monthly government stipend that many scholarship students receive.

Your Task:

Watch the video below to get a sense of everyday life in Italy and how Italians live and interact with each other. This will give you a realistic and encouraging picture of what to expect.

Step 6: Confirm That Your Italian Degree Will Be Globally Recognised

A degree from an Italian university carries the same international standing as a degree from a university in the US, UK, Canada, or any other developed country. Italian degrees are recognised worldwide, which means your qualification will open doors for employment or further study anywhere in the world.

Your Task:

In your ‘My SOP-DIY’ folder, write a short paragraph — no more than half a page — answering this question: Why do I want to study in Italy? Mention the field you want to study, the universities that interest you, and what excites you about the opportunity. This exercise will also help you later when you prepare your Statement of Purpose for admission.

You have completed Lesson 1.

Please make sure you have:

1. Saved the names of at least three Italian universities in your ‘My SOP-DIY’ folder.
2. Noted the tuition fees of each university.
3. Identified at least one English-taught program per university.
4. Made a note to plan for your IELTS preparation.
5. Written your short paragraph on why you want to study in Italy.
